I have been the Art Director for SVPN magazine for the last six years. While directing the creative department, I am able to work with many stunning subjects to produce timeless covers and design compelling features and articles. More than anything else, I love working with photographers, copy writers, and designers to create a magazine that I can hold in my hands—smell the ink, hear the pages slide through my fingers, and to roll it up into my back pocket—something you just can't do with a website.
Working as a contractor with the State of Idaho and the STEM Action Center I get to create and design a lot of fun stuff that appeals to kids, parents, teachers and law makers. My job is to promote the importance of sciences to the future of Idaho and it’s workforce. I have created logos, illustrations, collateral, program booklets, ads, white paper, handouts, website designs, headers, banners and MailChimp templates.
Smoke Guard manufactures and installs the Smoke GuardSystem: an innovative code-compliant gasket for fire-rated elevator hoistway doors. Like most big businesses their product requires tech sheets. This design used a blueprint-styled drawing on the back to illustrate the functionality of their curtains.
This year I was again asked by the TVCA board to help create a new look for their posters and t-shirts. I created a family crest with our hero at the top and all the follies that may fall upon him. In the poster, I moved the design to the streets to symbolize how difficult it can be to ride your bike and be safe. Turning the design into sewer cover art fit the setting of the Boise city streets and underscored its meaning and message.
Growing up listening to my parents’ records and the rock bands on the radio on the way to school, I fell in love with all kinds of music. It's fitting that this client promotes musical groups and puts them on a cruise ship with adoring fans headed for the tropics. I worked directly and indirectly with famous rock stars and other musical personalities to create websites, ads, design and theme casinos, and collateral to promote the cruises and the music that rocks the boat.
I worked with Wada Farms Marketing Group and Fusionware, a software company used to track, pack, store, and take to market Idaho potatoes and other produce. I created advertising collateral and designs for marketing, and I also get the chance to illustrate and work with photographers to come up with the best images to tell the story.
In addition to my design work, I was a member of the Wood River Fire and Rescue Department for seven years—which is where I got the nickname, “Jonny Fuego.” While there, I made friends with members of the Boise Fire Department and their Local 149 Union. I teamed up with a Boise project manager and their public safety officer to create a PSA campaign that lasted three years. Each of the six graphics were hand-drawn then finished in Illustrator for the ads, posters, and infographics. Each campaign also had six radio spots.
Boise Bike Week 2016
I love bikes and everything with two wheels. So when I was asked by the TVCA board to create a simple design with clean lines for the 2016 Boise Bike Week, I did exactly that. I actually offered them five designs to choose from. The other designs are next year's possibilities. Forever Two Wheels - FTW
Schöffel is a high-end outerwear company that focuses on technical gear. I created dealer catalogs, POP displays, consumer catalogs—you name it. Whatever they needed I created.
For the consumer catalogs, I used photos from a Sun Valley Heli Ski tour and shot the product myself in my studio. To keep the clothing shots fresh and animated, I used leggings stuffed with cotton fill and wire, and posed them to give them life. For the dealer catalogs, I commissioned a local artist to paint scenes from the Sun Valley area using the colors from the Schöffel line.
Legends Lumber is a timber reclaiming company that searches throughout the United States, Canada, and Mexico for historic wooden structures. The structures are dismantled and disassembled and then inventoried and readied for their journey to a new life in a carefully designed home or commercial structure. For this company, I created pamphlets, books, brochures, and website design.
All packaging has a purpose. It is hindered by stipulations, measurements, shipping, aesthetics, and the clients of the client. I always want to design a compelling piece that meets all of that criteria AND stands out from the rest.
I photograph both models and product in my studio before creating the design. Most of the flat artworks you see are press-ready files to demonstrate that I can design and prepare my work for press.
Scott USA was one of my first big clients. I was given a bunch of images by the company and was dared to create a sales catalog for their upcoming show and they loved the design. They ordered extra from the press as they knew they would run out at shows.
USDA Forest Service
I was commissioned by the US Forest Service in Washington D.C. to create website headers for all 50 states. State offices sent me images of the flora and fauna in their area and I designed the header unique to their county/state.
I had the chance to take a blank canvas in the form of an old school bus and design a food truck brand along with the fits and finishes that went along with it.
Bicycle Design and Fabrication
To keep my skills sharp, I am also a designer and builder of custom one-off bicycles. I draw the designs, I build then fabricate from steel and aluminum, matching what the client wants and needs. I was also lucky enough to have authored a book, Cruisers in 2009. You can find it for sale on Amazon and other book sales sites.
